Woman changing a flat tire

Regular Chevrolet service is essential for maintaining and protecting your vehicle, and for keeping it running right for a long time to come. That’s why our team at Wilkinson Chevrolet GMC provides high-quality service and advice you can rely on, and why we’re sharing top tips for protecting your vehicle between appointments, like how to change a tire.

Get to Safety

The first thing you’ll want to do is pull your vehicle away from traffic, preferably to a flat location. Put on the hazard lights so other drivers know to keep a safe distance and put your emergency brake into place. You’ll want to try to chock or wedge your tires if you can.

Loosen the Lug Nuts

You’ll want to begin loosening the lug nuts next. Break the pressure of the lug nuts and loosen them between ¼-1/2 of a turn, but no more. You want to keep the lug nuts and the tire in place until the next step is complete.

Raise the Vehicle

Use your manual to locate the proper position for the jack, then raise your vehicle off the ground, attaching your jack to a solid part of the frame. At this stage, finish removing the lug nuts and then remove the flat tire and place it to the side. Replace it with your spare tire.

Tighten the Lug Nuts

While the vehicle is still in the air, tighten the lug nuts by hand in a star formation. Then lower the vehicle to the ground. Once the tire is touching the ground, but not sitting fully, tighten the lug nuts completely. Lower the vehicle all the way and tighten the lug nuts once more. Then come down to our Chevrolet service center to get the problem solved for good.
